How It Works

Add Page Numbers to a PDF in 3 Steps

Page numbers are added directly to your PDF pages using pdf-lib — no re-rendering, no quality loss, no server upload. Your original content is completely unchanged; the number is added as a new text layer.

  1. Upload your PDF: Drag and drop or click to browse. No file size limits.
  2. Configure: Set your prefix (or leave blank for numbers only), starting number, position, font size, and colour.
  3. Download: Click Apply Page Numbers and save the numbered PDF to your device.
🔒 Your file never leaves your device: RapidTools processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript. No server ever receives your PDF. This makes it safe for confidential reports, legal documents, and any file you wouldn’t want stored on a third-party server.

Add Page Numbers to Any PDF — Free, Without Adobe

Adobe Acrobat Pro charges over $250 a year for features like page numbering. RapidTools does the same job for free, directly in your browser, with no software to install and no file ever uploaded to a server.

Common Use Cases

Prefix Options

The prefix field lets you customise the format of your page numbers:

Continuing Page Numbers Across Multiple Documents

If you need a continuous page sequence across several PDF files, use the Starting Number field. For example, if your first document has 18 pages (ending at page 18), set Starting Number to 19 for the second document. The sequence will be seamless across the full set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add page numbers to a PDF without Adobe?
Yes. RapidTools adds page numbers to any PDF directly in your browser — no Adobe subscription required. Upload your PDF, configure your settings, and download the numbered result. Your file never leaves your device.
Will adding page numbers affect the quality or content of the PDF?
No. The page number is added as a new text layer on top of the existing page. Your original content — text, images, formatting, links — is completely unchanged. Nothing is re-rendered or recompressed.
Can I start numbering from a page other than 1?
Yes. Set the Starting Number field to any value. This is useful when combining this document with others in a sequence, or when a cover page should not count as page 1.
Can I remove page numbers after applying them?
Once applied and downloaded, the page numbers are embedded in the PDF content layer and cannot be removed without paid PDF editing software. Always keep a copy of the original un-numbered PDF before applying.
Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript and the pdf-lib library. Your file never leaves your device — not to our servers or any third party.
Does this work on mobile?
Yes. The tool works on iOS Safari and Android Chrome. Upload from your Files app or cloud storage, configure the numbering, and download directly to your device.
